The Mattapan Open Streets/ Open Studios (MOS/OS) is a community-engaged arts and design initiative that came out of the critical need for increased local arts and the lack of studio space for Mattapan area artists and community cultural engagement. In light of the fact that there are many creative people who live and work in Mattapan with very little access to opportunity and that Mattapan had never had an Open Studios, we decided to turn the concept of Open Studios on its head, and create pop-up spaces all over the neighborhood. We then took it a step further and launched tactical design initiatives to transform the neighborhood landscape using artful community development.
Through creative placekeeping, we are building community and economic development through the arts. design, and urban planning with a social equity lens, and inclusive participatory community engagement together to build a positive impact in Boston's oldest neighborhood (want to know more about Mattapan's history? Come to a walking tour!).
